- To: fellow music fans
- From: K. Rumery
- Subject: Industrial strength Music fonts
- Date: Nov. 28, 1987
-
- The music font included in this package is free for your personal use.
- It may not be included in or with any commercial package without my
- written permission.
-
- Load "Sinfonia" into your system file with the "Font/DA Mover."
-
- The "Sinfonia" music font was created with "Fontastic" and "Fontastic Plus"
- because I was dissatisfied with fonts (and the formatting restrictions)
- which were included in various commercial music programs. I wanted
- something which could be used easily in graphics programs like FullPaint
- or SuperPaint to create music examples, modest scores, and parts. Fairly
- complex scores can be made with "Sinfonia" by using various paint tools,
- especially the lasso and line drawing tool.
-
- The glyphs are much larger than the indicated 12 point size simply because
- the 12 point designation was handy and the music characters were
- proportional to 10 or 12 point characters in BostonII or Geneva.
-
- I used "Sinfonia 12" to prepare a vocal score which has been accepted for
- publication. The task was somewhat more tedious than careful pen-and-ink
- work -- but a LOT easier to edit. I had absolute control over spacing and
- format. The score pages were printed as SuperPaint documents on a
- LaserWriter (with "smoothing" and "precision bit map" options on). The
- publisher made a 15% reduction of this copy and used it as photo-ready
- material. Hence, the designation "industrial strength."
-
- The music characters were mapped into the option key and option-shift key
- part of the Macintosh keyboard. For example, option-q is a stem-up
- quarter note. option-shift-q is a stem-down quarter note. Option-4 is
- a quarter rest. The treble clef is in two sections to lower the memory
- overhead cause by sparcely populated bit-maps.
-
- "Sinfonia" is also available in other sizes (10,14,16,18, 20 and 24).
- One can make flash cards with the largest size. In addition, I designed a
- new family of music glyphs called "Rondeau." This family is availble in 10,
- 12, and 14 point sizes and includes alpha-numeric characters to enable one
- to include text without having to change fonts. Good time-signature
- numbers reside in the upper case numerals. The letters are true 10, 12,
- and 14 point sizes and the notes are three times larger to obtain proper
- proportions (i.e. 10 point is actually 36 point).
-
- Keyboard guides, full samplers, and font files of both the "Sinfonia" and
- "Rondeau" music font families are available on request.
-
- If you want the guides, samplers and all of the font sizes for both
- families, I will sent the material on a 400K disk. Please include $10 with
- your request to cover my expenses (I'll supply the disk, mailer, time, etc).
- The material is intended for free non-commercial personal use and may not
- be included in or be used to induce the sale of a commercial package without
- my permission. If material is published using my fonts, more power to you.
- All I ask is that you acknowledge the music font maker in the credits.
-
- Send comments or questions on "Sinfonia 12" to K.Rumery on GEnie. I'd like
- to know if you use it as-is or make changes to it. Please share any
- suggestions (or modifications) with me. The computer keyboard associations
- I made for each character seemed logical and work for me. At the same time,
- these associations could seem weird to someone else. I'll try to incorporate
- good ideas in future releases of Sinfonia (but wouldn't it be great to enter
- notes from a piano keyboard).
